(Rhaumnus purshiana) Cascara sagrada has been used traditionally by Native Americans for cleansing the bowel, and one of the best herbs available to cure chronic constipation. The superior kind of laxative qualities offered by cascara sagrada makes it a wonderful colon cleansing herb. It has this ability because its bark is rich in hormone-like oils which promote peristaltic action in the intestinal canal. The effectiveness of this colon cleansing herb is normally attributed to anthraquinone. Cascara Sagrada contains vitamin B-complex, calcium, potassium, manganese, and trace of tin, lead, strontium, and aluminum.
