The main energy source for body cells is glucose, which they absorb from the blood with the help of a hormone called insulin. Gestational Diabetes~ This form of DIABETES MELLITUS develops in about 1 in 50 women during pregnancy; it is more common in overweight women and those over the age of 30. Some of the hormones that the placenta produces during pregnancy have an anti-insulin effect. If the body cannot produce enough insulin to counter this effect, blood glucose levels rise too high and GESTATIONAL DIABETES develops. This form of DIABETES usually diappears after birth.
