Cinchona is a tree in which people use the bark for its medicinal properties. Cinchona is used for increasing appetite, promoting the release of digestive juices, bloating, and other stomach issues. Cinchona, also called Peruvian bark, is used for blood vessel disorders including hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and leg cramps. Cinchona has been used since the early 1700s because it contains a chemical called quinine (a medication used to treat malaria and babesiosis). However, its not used to prevent malaria, but to kill the Plasmodium parasites responsible for the disease itself. The plasmodium parasites gets into the red blood cells and causes malaria. The quinine, acts by interfering with the growth and reproduction of these parasites, thus killing them quickly. Other uses of Cinchona bark are: Swine flu, mild influenza, cancer, mouth and throat diseases, enlarged spleen, muscle cramps, and the common cold.
