Lions mane mushroom is a very peculiar looking fungus growing in wooded areas, more particularly oak trees. Despite the white and hairy appearance, it’s edible. Its a good substitute for scallops, lobster, crab and other seafood. Besides the delicious taste of this mushroom, it also has medicinal properties. Lions mane is well known for healing neural problems such as dementia, alzheimers, and anxiety. It’s also been used for gastrointestinal issues and healing wounds faster. Studies have found that lion’s mane mushrooms contain two special compounds that can stimulate the growth of brain cells: hericenones and erinacines. These compounds protect brain cells from degeneration. Lion’s mane extract can also reduce inflammation and prevent tissue damage in other areas of the intestines. In fact, it can help treat inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Lion’s mane can protect against the development of stomach ulcers by inhibiting the growth of H. pylori and protecting the stomach lining from damage. Other ailments that lions mane can help are: heart disease, cancer, diabetes, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal problems and inflammation of the body.
